HURRICANE DIABETES

Medical Supplies The American Diabetes Association remains in contact with the American Red Cross, and with pharmaceutical and diabetes supply companies, and has been assured that diabetes supplies have been sent to the devastated areas (PDF). As you know, relief agencies are working hard to overcome the many challenges involved in getting supplies (food, water, and medical) into the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina. NEW!! As the relief agencies continue to gain ground in the delivery of all types of critical supplies, many members of the ADA community have asked how they can help the Katrina relief effort by specifically donating supplies for people with diabetes in the disaster area. In recent days, a Hurricane Diabetes Relief Center has been organized by the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana State University System in Baton Rouge, LA. Physicians and staff of the Research Center are obtaining the needed supplies, going to shelters on a daily basis and providing the basic care which includes insulin, medications, glucose strips and meters. The Center is in great need of supplies, including the following: Glucose Testing Supplies Glucometers Strips Lancets Gloves Alcohol preps Gauze sponges Band-aids Sharps containers Glucose tablets Glucose gels Insulin Insulin-R, 10 ml vials Insulin-N, 10 ml vials Glargine, Lispro, Aspart Premixed Insulins (70/30, 75/25) Syringes Oral Antidiabetics Glyburide 5 mg Glipizide 5 mg Metformin 500 mg Metformin 850 mg Pennington is accepting supplies donations at the following address: Pennington Biomedical Research Center ATTN: HURRICANE DIABETES RELIEF 6400 Perkins Road Baton Rouge, LA 70808
