(16) Phyllis says:

It’s a shame that New Orleans and surrounding areas are in a devastating situation. This should have been well planned ahead of time in case a hurricane of this size would come. No one should feel that we are prejudiced because of the vast amount of black people living there. We are all one with God. We are here to help one another. This is the only way we will survive as a free country. A word to the people out there, have hope, we love you. Everytime I look at the devastating pictures on TV, I can’t help but cry my heart out. My prayers are with you. I will send what every amount my budget allows to help in whatever way I can.

Blessings to all!

(24) Roxanne says:

The President says the people of New Orleans need to be patient. What they need is food and water.

President Bush likes to rally behind 09/11 for support of his war. It is likely that more Americans will die in 09/2005 from the government’s slow response than were killed by terrorist in 09/2001.

If it were rich white people needing food and water, they would have had it in hours not in days.

September 2, 2005 at 1:37 pm
(25) Debbie from Indiana says:

To all victims, my heart goes out to you! I will continue to pray that all your needs be met. I will also pray that our government and citizens make America their first mission field. We must take care of our own.

September 2, 2005 at 1:48 pm
(28) Mary W. says:

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope those with the resources get to you very soon with food, water and medicine. There is no excuse for this neglect by the government to continue a moment longer. If thousands of troupes can be sent in, why cannot food, water and medicine also be sent? It’s a disgrace. I have pledged all of my earnings in the month of September from my Tupperware web site at www.my.tupperware.com/wingsdove to the disaster relief efforts. This is not self-serving, this is for the people in need and for one organization which responded very quickly with food and water.

To all of you that are facing this terrible tragedy I can only say that my heart and prayers go out to you. I only hope to hear that you have all made it out finally. PRAY

September 2, 2005 at 1:59 pm
(36) Dawn West says:

To the victims of Hurricane Katrina,

You are not alone; there are many people who do care and who are doing their best to help you. There are people who are urging legislators to provide you all the help that you need in a more speedy fashion.

Your neighbors in other states are praying for you and your loved ones. We are trying to help you in whatever way that we can, great and small. It may not seem like much or that it is coming fast enough (and it is not fast enough because you need it NOW!) but, we will do our best to help you all as fast as we can.

Our thoughts are with you; we will continue to pray that you all receive the help that you need as we continue to do what we can to help you.

Please hang in there; you are not alone. You all do matter to us.

God Bless you all.

From one of many NJ residents who care.

September 2, 2005 at 2:02 pm
(39) Diane Reed says:

I have sent a donation to the American Friends Service Committe (the Red Cross seems to be short on emergency relief). I am so ashamed of our government and the lack of compassion our government heads in Washington have shown.

(44) MR says:

I feel extremely sad for the whole situation, but feel blame is wrong at this time. We are so good in the USA at saying ‘we will deal with that later, if it happens’ and ‘I cannot afford to pay any more taxes,no matter what it goes for,….just remember everything happens for a reason…hopefully we learn from our mistakes…..everyone…..

September 2, 2005 at 2:10 pm
(45) Jennifer says:

I’m English and horrified at the suffering I see on my TV. It seems to me that if it had been in a predominantly white state, help would have been forthcoming much sooner. Bush should resign immediately.

SORRY ABOUT WHATS HAPPENING YOU ARE IN OUR PRAYERS AND STAY STRONG YOU ALL CAN GET THROUGH THESE TOUGH TIMES

September 2, 2005 at 2:14 pm
(48) Frank Gutierrez says:

To all the liberal/Democrat cretins who, predictably, are politicizing this unprecedented catastrophe: Knock it off! Your seething hatred for President Bush helps no one. Your inane comments about his intelligence and lack of response merely reveal your ignorance and bigotry. If you’re interested in assigning blame, why not begin with the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana, both liberal Democrats. Aside from pleading for help and of course, criticizing the President, what brilliant ideas did they offer for preventing or at least, alleviating the present situation? The hurricane victims in Louisiana need food, water, shelter and maybe medicine. They don’t need liberal/Democrat hate talk.

September 2, 2005 at 2:14 pm

(54) Nanci says:

Our hearts are breaking, thinking of how much those in the heart of this disaster are suffering. And we’re all wondering why help hasn’t arrived sooner. I know this was a disaster of epic proportions, but I cannot help but wonder (like many others) - if Hurricane Katrina hit in a wealthy neighborhood (like Naples, Florida)- would the government still take DAYS to help the victims?!!
PS - FEMA stating that they “didn’t know how bad it was” in the stadium until Thursday morning is shameful. Don’t they listen to the news?

September 2, 2005 at 2:28 pm
(55) MK Wright says:

I pray every day that the victims will be delivered to people who will care for and feed them until they are able to get back on their feet. May the Lord be with all of you and keep you safe.

(56) NYC says:

Oh, my God. I’m in New York and I can’t stop crying. My heart is breaking for these poor people. They have a right to be mad. Why did it take so long for our government to respond? If we’d stop supporting the rest of the world (so people will like us), we’d have the resources to take care of our own, around the clock. The President cut his vacation short…Condi Rice was at a play in NY…Congress went back to DC early……….give me a break! People are starving and dying and it’s news that the government officials cut their vacation short? They should have been doing something Monday. Something is very wrong.

To the people in the Gulf region, we love you and we the American public pray for you and will help you. God bless you.

September 2, 2005 at 2:31 pm
(57) Chris Fidler says:

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims of Katrina. It is so incredibly sad that our government has so poorly responded to these poor people who are crying for help. If we can’t help our own first, what kind of nation are we?!?

Love and hugs to you all

My heart breaks everytime I see the suffering and pain on your faces. I see a smile on someones face and I think, that is a very strong person. God put that smile there to reassure that he is going to take care of things. Please stay strong and keep praying because I’m praying for you with every fiber of my being. I know in my heart that you will bounce back from this and be strong as ever. I wish I was there to help in any way that I could!!!!!!!!

(70) Kristi Kramer says:

I have been praying for everyone there and my heart goes out to you. I pray that our government kicks it into full drive and gets SOS to you ASAP and transports everyone out of that entire city to safety. I’m a single mom of a young child here and have volunteered to help with the Red Cross in our area in hopes that every bit of effort pays off. The government should have acted sooner and been more prepared; another rude awakening and eye-opener like the 9-1-1 when America let its guard down. We need to stand as ONE and be there for our fellow Americans in this time in need. I wish the government would have focused more on evacuating the ENTIRE city before the storm ever hit, especially when there are thousands who are stranded in the worst conditions that no man should ever have to experience. This was not just another hurricane, but a catastrophic disaster. We can’t control what nature does, but our government sure could have done a lot more if they had sent any means of transportation in helping EVERY citizen out “ahead of time” by a day or two when knowing what size of a storm was about to hit. I am also very disgusted with the ignorance that some are showing by going on rampages and raping women, causing violence, etc. This behavior is unforgiving and has angered Americans every where; justice should be served on-site to put an end to these devilish acts. As for everyone else, my prayers are with you always.

My prayers and thoughts are with you today. After my experience with Agnes I know the life of being in a shelter for several days with a 9 month old baby, and a husband that was just getting over a heartattack. Being in the Superdome was mega compared to my being in a Salvation Army. I was very grateful but glad to get back home. i wish you good luck and success in finding a place to call home once again. Sorry I am homebound so am unable to help with the cleanup.

I apologize for our (idiot)President, who does not help our own, but kills our men and women in a war that should never have been, (who should be impeached), who has ruined our country, put us into deep debt that we may never recover from, who has made the world hate us and how that we are in this terrible trouble, there is not enough of our military to help, nor the money, and this idiot of a so-called President doesn’t care or want to help those who are really in need…only his rich buddies! I’m so sorry for what has happened to you and all I can do is pray and send donations to you. I apologize for our United States and what it has become and can’t believe what I see that’s happened to you. I know the American people will be there soon and the help will be overwhelming.

First of all let me just say my heart goes out to each and everyone of you. I can’t imagine going through what you are going through right now. It is heartbreaking to watch the news and see babies crying on t.v. and you don’t know when and if they will be able to eat or even if they will survive. Like most people would say, I have never seen anything like this in my lifetime. I keep trying to remind myself of how big of a tradagy this is. You all have lost everything, including loved ones and homes. I weep for you. I weep for your children. I also weep for those who did not make it. My prayers are with you always. Stay strong and safe. May god be with you.

Dearest fellow citizens of Lousiana and Mississippi:

I hope that when this sad and terrible situation is resolved and you are all safe from harm, you will realize that those of us in New York City were here for you from the very beginning and that not one of you were ever far from our minds and were ever in our prayers. Although, when it seemed to you that you’d been forsaken, we were raising money, praying and urging our government to respond more immediately.

Never never believe that your fellow Americans had forgotten you or were insensitive to your dire situation.

This is not only your tragedy, but it is, as will be seen in coming days and months, America’s tragedy. We have lost precious lives, precious cities that will never be the same.

But, cities can be rebuilt, lives are more difficult, and we are here for you. Many have readied homes for you, strangers have offered refuge to you and we will not abandon you.

Much love to my brothers and sisters in Louisiana, Mississippi and outlying areas. We are praying for you. Each of you are family right now and we love you and worry about you the same as we would kin.

May God bless you and keep you all in His tender care and loving mercy.

(103) Bob Wolf says:

I lifted this from the internet —

To what degree can we rely on God to be with us? Is He really someone we can turn to at all…in times of crisis as well as times of calm?

Tragedy, Disaster, Terrorist Attacks: Where is God?

God is the Creator of the universe who yearns for us to know Him. That is why we are all here. It is His desire that we rely on and experience His strength, love, justice, holiness and compassion. So He says to all who are willing, “Come to Me.”
Unlike us, God knows what will happen tomorrow, next week, next year, the next decade. He says, “I am God, and there is no one like me, declaring the end from the beginning.”1 He knows what will happen in the world. More importantly, He knows what will occur in your life and can be there for you, if you’ve chosen to include Him in your life. He tells us that He can be “our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.”2 But we must make a sincere effort to seek Him. He says, “you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”3

That doesn’t mean that those who know God will escape difficult times. They won’t. When a terrorist attack causes suffering and death, those who know God will be involved in that suffering also. But there is a peace and a strength that God’s presence gives. One follower of Jesus Christ put it this way: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”4 Reality tells us that we will experience problems in life. However, if we go through them while knowing God, we can react to them with a different perspective and with a strength that is not our own. No problem has the capacity to be insurmountable to God. He is bigger than all the problems that can hit us, and we are not left alone to deal with them.

God’s Word tells us, “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.”5 And, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.”6

Jesus Christ told His followers these comforting words: “Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows.”7 If you truly turn to God, He will care for you as no one else does, and in a way that no one else can.

Tragedy, Disaster, Terrorist Attacks: Our Free Will
God has created humanity with the ability to choose. This means that we are not forced into a relationship with Him. He allows us to reject Him and to commit other evil acts as well. He could force us to be loving. He could force us to be good. But then what kind of relationship would we have with Him? It would not be a relationship at all, but a forced, absolutely controlled obedience. Instead He gave us the human dignity of free will.
Naturally, we cry from the depths of our souls…”But God, how could You let something of this magnitude happen?”

How would we want God to act? Do we want Him to control the actions of people? In the case of dealing with a terrorist attack, what could possibly be an acceptable number of deaths for God to allow?! Would we feel better if God allowed only the murder of hundreds? Would we rather God allowed only the death of one person? Yet if God would prevent the murder of even one person, there is no longer freedom to choose. People choose to ignore God, to defy God, to go their own way and commit horrible acts against others.

Tragedy, Disaster, Terrorist Attacks: Our World
This planet is not a safe place. Someone might shoot us. Or we might be hit by a car. Or we might have to jump from a building attacked by terrorists. Or any number of things that might happen to us in this harsh environment called Earth, the place where God’s will is not always followed.
Yet, God is not at the mercy of people, but the other way around. We are at His mercy, fortunately. This is God who created the universe with its uncountable stars, simply by speaking the words, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky.”8 This is God who says He “reigns over the nations.”9 He is unlimited in power and wisdom. Though problems seem insurmountable to us, we have an incredibly capable God who reminds us, “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh; is anything too hard for Me?”10 Somehow He is able to maintain the freedom of sinful humans, yet still bring about His will. God clearly says, “My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all My purpose.”11 And we can draw comfort from that if our lives are submitted to Him. “For God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”12

Fears, Tragedy, Disaster: Where Is God Now?
Many of us–no, all of us–choose at times to stiff-arm God and His ways. Compared to others, certainly compared to a terrorist, we might consider ourselves to be respectable, loving people. But in the raw honesty of our own hearts, if we were to face God, it would be with the knowledge of our sin. As we begin to address God in prayer, are we not caught short, paused by the sense that God is well aware of our thoughts, actions and self-centeredness? We have…by our lives and actions…distanced ourselves from God. We have often lived like we could run our lives just fine without Him. The Bible says that “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way.”13
The consequences? Our sin has separated us from God, and it affects more than this life. The penalty for our sin is death, or eternal separation from God. However, God has provided a way for us to be forgiven and know Him.

Inner Strength Through God’s Love
God came to earth to rescue us. “For God so loved the world, that he sent his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.”14
God knows the pain and suffering we encounter in this world. Jesus left the safety and security of His home, and entered the hard environment we live in. Jesus got tired, knew hunger and thirst, battled accusations from others and was ostracized by family and friends. But Jesus experienced far more than daily hardships. Jesus, the Son of God in human form, willingly took all of our sin on Himself and paid our penalty of death. “In this is love, that he laid down his life for us.”15 He went through torture, dying a slow, humiliating death of suffocation on a cross, so that we could be forgiven.

Jesus told others ahead of time that He would be crucified. He said that three days after His death He would come back to life, proving that He is God. He didn’t say He would reincarnate someday. (Who would know if He actually did it?) He said three days after being buried He would show Himself physically alive to those who saw His crucifixion. On that third day, Jesus’ tomb was found empty and many people testified to seeing Him alive.

He now offers us eternal life. We don’t earn this. It is a gift from God offered to us, which we receive when we ask Him to enter our lives. “The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.”16 If we repent of our sin and turn back to God, we can have the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. It’s pretty simple. “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”17 He wants to enter our lives.

Inner Strength Through God’s Plan
What about heaven? The Bible says that God has “set eternity in the hearts of men.”18 Maybe that means we know, in our hearts, what a better world would look like. The death of people we love convinces us that there’s something very wrong with this life and this world. Somewhere deep down in our souls, we know that there must be a much better place to live, free from heart-wrenching difficulties and pain. To be sure, God does have a better place He offers us. It will be a completely different system in which His will is done all the time. In this world, God will wipe every tear from people’s eyes. There will be no more mourning, crying, death or pain.19 And God, by His Spirit, will dwell in people in such a way that they will never sin again.20
The events of a terrorist attack are horrific enough. Refusing an eternal relationship with God, which Jesus offers you, would be worse. Not just in light of eternal life, but there is no relationship which compares to knowing God in this life. He is our purpose in life, our source of comfort, our wisdom in confusing times, our strength and hope. “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”21

It has been said by some that God is just a crutch. But it is likely that He is the only reliable one.

Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”22 For those who will rely on Jesus during their lives, He says it is like building your life on a Rock. Whatever crises attack you in this life, He can keep you strong.

Inner Strength Through God’s Son
You can receive Jesus into your life right now. “To all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”23 It is through Jesus Christ that we can come back to God. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.”24 Jesus offered, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him.”25
Right now you can ask God to enter your life. You can do this through prayer. Prayer means talking honestly with God. At this moment you can call out to God by telling Him something like this in sincerity:

“God, I have turned away from You in my heart, but I want to change that. I want to know You. I want to receive Jesus Christ and His forgiveness into my life. I don’t want to be separated from You anymore. Be the God of my life from this day onward. Thank you God.”

Have you just now sincerely asked God into your life? If you have, you have a lot to look forward to. God promises to make your present life one of greater satisfaction through knowing Him.26 Where is God? He promises to make His home in you.27 And He gives you eternal life.28

No matter what happens in the world around you, God can be there for you. Though people do not follow God’s ways, God is able to take horrible circumstances and bring about His plan anyway. God is ultimately in control over world events. If you are God’s, then you can rest on the promise that, “All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.”29

Jesus Christ said, “My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”30 He promises never to fail us or forsake us.31

To grow in your knowledge of God and His will for your life, read the sections Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the Bible.

(128) Tonya Hendricks says:

To the Hurricane Victims. My heart truly aches and cries for every single person. I am just as furious with the government and everyone else who’s job was to protect and help. (FEMA etc.) as you are. It is so sad that it takes a frightening and unbeleivable catastrophe to open peoples minds and to make changes. Changes that by all accounts should have been done 20 years ago. I reside in Indianapolis Indiana. I am quite a ways from this sad sad chain of events. But I can surely tell you I have cried and prayed. Before the storm as well as after the storm. I have been to your city(New Orleans) the people that I had met along the way were nice folks. As god as my witness. There is a reason for everything. We as a country had to be awaken by the terrorist attacks in 2001. We are again awaken by this. I am truly sorry for your losses. If I had a house I would offer my home to some family. But I do not. All I have is prayer. And a little money to help. I’d just like to say that I follow the weather, it is a passion of mine. Although, I cannot be a storm chaser. ( My mom would kill me!) I have been in a hurricane. Not as the magnitude and force you all have seen and been through but what I had seen that day terrified me. Just know that Indiana is thinking of all of you and have donated lot’s and lot’s of money to help those in need. May god punish those that didnot come to your aid sooner. There guilt and sorrow will live with them forever. I have still lot’s to say, but I am going to close so everyone else can get their turn to say there peace. Please take care and know that HE is GOD! Love Tonya

Dear Fellow Americans,
Keep your spirits high even when things are low, we have weathered many things that have left us with no hope. But we have always come out on top. This wonderful country is made up of many similar souls with different faces and yet we always seem to prosper when others say we are finished. The best comes out when we face the worse together as americans, we came to this country with nothing and look at what we are today. We are survivors and the south will rise again. God Bless you all. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

(146) Tonya says:

As I read over some of the other letters sent in by people I wonder if they have ever made a bad decision. I don’t care if you lost everything in a hurricane, tsunami, or other natural disaster. You may have had the resources (money, transportation, etc.) It really does’nt matter. Some of these people may have been able to leave but what about the poor, sick, elderly, and lets face it stupid. We as human beings make mistakes even grave mistakes but we also as human beings, Americans must have compassion for our fellow man. What is wrong with the world today is we want to put it off on someone else or say maybe they deserve this. BULL!!! Everyone deserves clean drinking water, food, shelter. The people who think that the hurricane victims deserve this should ask the Lord to help them know and show a little compassion. The Lord tells us to love our neighbor as ourselves. We need to pull together for these people. Open your lives to them. You may just get something out of it you never expected.

(147) Anouk says:

I feel for the soliders in Iraq who are probably wondering why they aren’t saving Amercian lives. Instead they’re fighting a war based on lies in a country where they weren’t invited or welcome.

I feel for the thousands of innocent victims of this hurricane and especially those in New Orleans. Neglected because they are poor and have no voice.

I just read that 30 Brits were moved out of the Superdome after a few days by the army because they were being racially threatened. They were the only white folks seeking shelter there. They were taken to a safe hotel. Why weren’t the poor women who were raped taken to safety? Why weren’t the hundreds of hungry infants taken to safety? It’s a race issue and it’s shameful.

Shame on this government and their religious rhetoric. They are not Christians, they do not love their neighbours equally. This is not acceptable, we will fight for you so this never happens again.

(151) Laura says:

To all victims of Katrina:

I can only think I can imagine your horror…only you truly know. As a mother of 3, I cry at the thought of watching my children endure what you and your children are experiencing.

Our nation should be humiliated by its slow and meager response, and results thereof. The private sector is responding as quickly and lucratively as they can. No one I have encountered has voice anything other than empathy, the desire to help, and outrage at the delay in transferring donations to you. Know this: People do care, and they are donating funds quickly, and passionately. Patience is not a possibility as you watch people die due to lack of basic essentials that until Monday, most people in this country took for granted. Finger-pointing will not help at this stage, however a full investigation needs to take place once people are safe and sheltered with food and water and needed medical care. Those in a position of authority need to realize that with power comes responsibility (and lives are more important than a vacation.) I am most disturbed by sympathy that does not offer help at the same time…a responsible leader would have been at the scene immediately, and taken a hands-on approach. How can you watch people suffer, and not get personally involved? Walking down a street in Biloxi telling people you understand doesn’t fix anything. Wouldn’t it be nice if the victims of the lawless were as protected as the politician? Loosing your loved ones, home, and every material possession you had compounded by rape, beatings and other dehumanizations is unimaginable to anyone not living it. And no one should have to live it. I have 10 years combined experience with fire and rescue, and I am embarassed by FEMA’s so-called response. Not realizing the severity is not a valid argument…if the average internet troller had a clue, one would like to think that the agency responsible for our safety as a nation would. I find it impossible to believe they did not.

Let it be known that there are more people that care and are trying to help in any way they can, than there are hurtful people with private agendas.

I have donated, and will continue to do so as long as it is needed. I don’t really know how you are going to read this until you have shelter, and you are capable of e-mailing or calling someone yourself, but if I may supply these services to you (for example you do not have routine access to phone or internet), it would be an honor. One of my e-mail addresses is powellkiser@yahoo.com, and I will contact anyone you need me to, by phone or internet. If anyone without the time, but the capability to scan a list of names and contact info (ie, members of the press, emergency agencies, or a kind-hearted person doing all they can) would like to help victims contact their loved ones, I will gladly accept those lists, and contact the people on it.

Whether this gets to you somehow while you are still enduring this hell on earth, or afterwords, know that my heart has gone out to you from the beginning. Realize that the vast majority of the world has you in their thoughts and prayers, regardless of personal faith. Blessed be.

(157) mundoc says:

This is a two-fold message. Most importantly, this message goes out to the victims of this horrendous natural distaster. I was caught up in the Hurricane in the beginning (I’m from Florida). I am embarrassed in that I complained about not getting relief enough, then there are those of you who may not get relief for quite a long time. Puts everything into perspective. So while I’ve made a small donation and have you in prayers, I know it’s not enough but collectively we can make a difference and help begin the healing of restoring your lives.

The second part of this message goes out to those of you who have been living off of the government and when that was taken away, have been crying and moaning, wondering when they will help you again. It’s people like you who take advantage and abuse the system that punishes everyone else. Those of you out there who have no regard but to be selfish…those of you who have been looting, raping, stealing, fighting, not being thankful for the help that has been TRYING to get to you but you storm the planes, the helicopters, feeling that you’ve been misled. You have not been misled. You have chosen to use this disaster as an excuse to show your true colors, your true personalities. The fact that you are choosing to hurt your OWN people, those in the same situation as you, just shows how shallow and selfish you are. Those are those who deserve to be helped, who desperately need it, but because YOU have chosen to be stupid and ignorant, products of your environment which you have chosen to accept as your Way Of Life…..they are denied the help and hope they so desperately need. Instead of working together as a people, you have chosen to split up your own kind, your own family, your brothers and sisters. Shame on you. You don’t deserve help or aid. It’s others who do. Shame on you. May you receive full payment for the sins and atrocities you have caused.

I lost my husband at the age of 49 very suddenly, and I had the chance to go to New Orleans to a convention so that I could get continuing education in the medical field that I was in, and I spent a lot of time in the classroom, but I also spent a LOT of time sightseeing, and so many of the kind and wonderful citizens of New Orleans helped me when I got lost, or when I needed directions, etc. and I wish nothing but the best for all of you…and while it is difficult to think that there will ever be a time when you will be able to think positively, there will, and I will be the happiest person in the world for all of you…and I WILL BE BACK!!! Thank you New Orleans, and the South…it will always be my favorite part of the country! May God Bless You All and Keep You Safe Today, Tomorrow, and in the difficult days to come…Becki

(186) Mary Donovan says:

My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones or possessions or livelihoods as the result of the devastation caused by Katrina. It’s hard to imagine the suffering each and everyone in her path is feeling at this very minute. Each and every life is valuable and irreplaceable, and it is horrifying to observe the present circumstances, which must be as close to hell as one could ever be.
However, just as horrifying is the thought pattern coming through our major media and also expressed in some of the previous comments made in the above letters. Many, many people are construing the misfortune of millions of people to put blame on someone for what has happened. Granted, emotions run high when survival is barely within grasp, but for observers (reporters, do-gooders,black activists, and Democrats among them) to use these circumstances as a platform to belittle our governement, which was elected by the majority of the people, and especially the President, for what has happened is absolutely ludicrous. And disturbing. President Bush no more caused this hurricane and the resulting suffering than the Man in the Moon. Anyone who could place the blame on him is crazy. This disaster was caused by Mother Nature. Period. End of discussion. Numerous factors at the time of impact and shortly thereafter, some of which could not have been controlled, have brought about the suffering and death of many, many people. Many factors which would have preserved more of the city of New Orleans were, in fact, in the process of being remedied…on the drawing board and in committee. Had this hurricane occurred a year from now, or two years from now, maybe the situation would not have been so grim, but what is, is, and the most important thing to do now is to help our fellow man, not try to blame any body. At the appropriate time, things will be studied and analyzed, and maybe the next time a natural disaster of this magnitude happens, there will be a little less suffering.
A comment was made on national television tonight that President Bush doesn’t care about black people. Absurd!! Get off the self-pitty wagon, and take responsibility for yoursef, mister. Nix your mindset of being victimized because of your skin color. How stupid to even think that a president would let people die if he could prevent it, in front of the entire nation on national media, because of his personal preferences. The fact of the matter is that the population of New Orleans is mostly black, and the poverty level of New Orleans is inordinately high. Logically, most of the people who could not drive out of the city would be black. Since many of those would be supported and aided the most by the federal government under normal circumstances, they would follow suit under these dire circumstances, also. Very logical, and not a matter of bigetry at all. The sad part of the equation is that they have expected the federal government
