With the Animals
I spent the Sunday and Monday of Katrina, with the animals at a small animal hospital in Metairie. After that, we spent our time cleaning up and walking the animals, until the doctors figured out a way to get the animals to the Agricultural Center at LSU. My job was to handle the front desk. Basically answer questions and do the receptionist duties that I was used to doing.
That changed after the storm. Not only did I answer phones (We could not understand why they worked.), but I helped walk the dogs and clean cages. There, the doctors were walking dogs right alongside everyone else, and even family members.
The exodus to Baton Rouge was amazing. There I was, that Thursday after, on a dump truck with about 30 dogs, and from there we drove to a Coach Bus. Once on the bus, we took the bus back to the hospital ( I do not know why), and loaded the remaining dogs making over 70. They were all so beautiful and amazing. I sat next to a beautiful German Shephard, and a gorgeous Golden Retriever sat behind us. Because that dog was so good and patient, I did not have to hold his leash.
Another huge dog, a labrador sat underneath me, and every once in a while would use my knee as a rest. When he did that, I would stroke his head.
It was amazing. The people at the Ag Center are doing a great job. I don't know where I'll be but the dogs are safe and happy.
