About.com Sci Fi Guide Gets Self Out of New Orleans
I turned off the AC, unplugged appliances (including my beloved TiVo), and cleaned up my backyard.
I shoved - er, placed the cat in her carrier and loaded up the car. I told my house to "be safe" and "keep dry."
I always take the Causeway when there's a hurricane coming, and, sure enough, it was much less crowded then the I-10. We made good time over the lake. (At twenty miles, the Causeway is the longest bridge in America.) I listened to the news and comforted my cat, who hates being in the car and kept clawing at the carrier.
Traffic got really slow at the end of the Causeway, as contra-flow traffic was coming in from the 12 and continuing along the 55, my chosen route as well. We would get up to speed for a few minutes, then another road would merge with the 55, and we'd all slow down to accommodate it.
I seriously regretted not having some coffee before I left, as my caffeine headache was combining with my driving headache and my anxiety headache to conspire against my entire nervous system.
