Following Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of New Orleans neighborhoods such as the Ninth Ward, Global Green USA, in partnership with Brad Pitt, committed to creating sustainable housing in New Orleans as well as along the Gulf Coast. After an international design competition to design a zero energy affordable home, the winners were Matthew Berman and Andrew Kotchen of Workshop/APD in New York. The first home is now complete and opened on May 15, 2008. It is available for tours.
The home is a 21st century version of a traditional shotgun. It has 2-stories, with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. Only green products were used, and the home is powered only by solar panels. Global Green and domino magazine partnered to decorate and furnish the house using sustainable materials. The home is part of a group of 5 private homes and an 18 unit apartment complex.
The model is located at 409 Andry Street, between Douglass Street and the river levee. The house is open for tours from 11 AM-4 PM Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 10 AM-1 PM on Saturdays. Call (504)309-9952 for tour information.
