Across the Mississippi River to Algiers
A fun way to spend an afternoon on your next visit to New Orleans is to take the Canal Street Ferry across the Mississippi River to Algiers Point. The Canal/Algiers Ferry is free and leaves from the dock at Canal Street every 30 minutes at quarter to and quarter past the hour. (Check to make sure you're on the right ferry because another ferry leaves from the same point to go to Gretna.)
After a short 5-6 minute ride on the ferry, you'll find a little known New Orleans neighborhood that is only one year younger than the French Quarter. Algiers Point, founded in 1719, has tree-lined streets of 19th Century houses, cafes and bars.
Algiers Point Neighborhood is always a fun place to visit because there is a schedule of events going on, some on a monthly or anual basis. If you will be in town in mid-October, it would be a great time to plan a ferry ride to Algiers for the Algiers Point Association annual tour of homes.
