Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre

By Sharon Keating, About.com

Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre is nearly 100 years old, and is perhaps the premier community theater in New Orleans, probably because it has been the scene of many Broadway-ready performances.

Some History

Back in 1916, a group of amateur actors formed the Drawing Room Player, named for the room where they began their performances. They soon outgrew the drawing room, and needing to expand, the company moved first to the Pontalba Building and then to its present location at St. Peter and Chartres. The building housing Le Petit was built in 1797.

Le Petit

The theater is equipped with professional grade lighting, sound, dressing rooms, etc. It houses two performance areas as well as a box office, and has long been a favorite venue for professional as well as amateur actors. Harry Connick Jr., Patricia Clarkson, Wynton Marsalis, and Bryan Batt began their careers onstage here. The playbills have run the gamut from musicals such as "Annie" and "Cabaret" to "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Summer and Smoke."
