Classic, A Celebration of Sugar Bowl Memories

By , About.com Guide

What:

Classic! A Celebration of Sugar Bowl Memories is an exhibit that showcases more than seven decades of Sugar Bowl history.

Where and When:

The exhibit is located at the Williams Gallery of the Historic New Orleans Collection in the French Quarter of New Orleans. 533 Royal Street. The exhibit runs through January 13, 2008. Hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Sundays, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., except holidays. The best part is it is free and open to the public.

Highlights of the Exhibit:

Highlights include Tulane running back “Monk” Simons’s incredible run in the 1935 game; Kentucky’s stunning upset of Oklahoma in 1951; the classic 1973 matchup between Ara Parseghian’s Fighting Irish and Bear Bryant’s Crimson Tide; Alabama’s gutsy goal-line stand in the 1979 Sugar Bowl, a move that secured the national championship title for the Tide; LSU’s national championship winning performance in 2004; and many more.

Even More:

You will also have the rare opportunity to view the original Sugar Bowl trophy, a silver bowl made in London in 1830 that will be on display for a limited time. There are posters, photos, interviews with players and coaches, scrapbooks and more to enjoy. The Sugar Bowl archives now reside permanently at the Historic New Orleans Collection after being saved from Hurricane Katrina.

Share Your Memories:

The Historic New Orleans Collection website has an interactive bulletin board where you can share your own memories of the Sugar Bowl.
