New Orleans - Sports Town USA
If you are a sports fan then New Orleans is the place to be. 2012 will bring a host of top notch events to the City that will have to please any sports enthusiast regardless of just what sport is your favorite. Venues will include the Louisiana Superdome, the New Orleans Arena and the Southern Yacht Club on Lake Pontchartrain. Additionally, there will be a myriad of smaller but no less important events, especially if you are a fan of one of them.
World Championship Sailboat Regatta
First off the City will host the International J-22 Class Association World Championship Sailboat Regatta. This will take place on Lake Pontchartrain and will be headquartered at the historic Southern Yacht Club. The event will take place October 9 - 15, 2011. Southern Yacht Club is proud to be the 2nd oldest yacht club in the United States tracing its beginnings to 1849. The SYC actually originated in Pass Christian, Mississippi but relocated to New Orleans in 1857 where it remains to this day.
College Bowl Games
The Allstate Sugar Bowl will present its 78th annual football extravaganza on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. Once again the Louisiana Superdome will serve as the venue for the big game. This venerable bowl always garners two of the nation’s top teams and viewer ship is always a chart topper.Just a week later the college football world will be tuned to the Crescent City in anticipation of the Bowl Championship Series contest for the title of National Champion in the college football ranks. This yeat it's the No. 1, SEC Champion LSU Tigers against the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide. The game will be featured on Monday, January 9th 2012 at 7:30 P.M. As always, this will be a hard fought race right to the end to see just which team is the best in the Nation.
NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament
April 2nd of 2012 will bring the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament to town. This will be held in the New Orleans Arena which serves as home to the New Orleans Hornets of professional basketball. What is especially exciting about this is that it is the final four and will determine who is the king of college basketball.
Arena Football Bowl
Still with me? The New Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football League have returned to New Orleans under Coach Pat O’Hara. That is great news but it was an even bigger news event since the League announced that New Orleans would be the site of Arena Bowl XXV to be played August 10, 2012 at the New Orleans Arena. This will be the City’s third time hosting the event having already done so in 2007 and 2008 as a neutral site. New Orleans fans love arena football and the league appears to love us.Super Bowl XLVII
And now for the “big tomato”! On February 3, 2013 the National Football League will present Super Bowl XLVII to be contested at the Louisiana Superdome, newly renamed the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. This will be New Orleans’ tenth time hosting this stellar event. The world wide media, attending fans and television viewers all over the world always comment that New Orleans is their favorite place for this spectacular to be held. Not only is the City interesting, it is also a photographic gem that plays well to the TV networks camera crews. It does not hurt either to have everything located within easy walking distance of the Dome. We’re talking about hotels, world famous restaurants and all of the other attractions that New Orleans has to offer. The City is abuzz with all of this sporting news. It is coming at the start of the professional and collegiate football season. At the time of this writing, the Tigers of Louisiana State University occupy the number one position in College football. Not to be outdone, the New Orleans Saints sit in the number two seat among the NFL’s elite. Not too shabby and to be sure there will be exciting times to come.
