In the lower Garden District: THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED.
The Lower Garden District has been heralded by many national magazines as one of the coolest neighborhoods in the country. If you frequent the area you know why. The area dates from the early 1800's and has the beauty of the Garden District, but is more Bohemian. Magazine Street runs through both the Lower Garden District and the Garden District. But, in the Lower it's has more shops and resturants. One of the newest and the best is Jackson, located at 1910 Magazine Street.
Run by waiters: Jackson, owned by a local attorney, but run by former waiter's tired of waiting for old restaurants to open is a great place for dinner. The chef's use of fresh Louisiana ingredients, combined with pecans and stilton cheese is about as good as it gets.
Fried green tomatoes: For an appetizer big enough to share try the fried green creole tomatoes covered with crawfish sauce. Also recommended are the oysters, perfectly fried with a great sauce. Another thing I like about Jackson is the wine list. It's varied and offers good wines at reasonable prices.
Haunted building: Jackson is housed in an old house dating to pre-civil war days and is reputedly haunted. I may have been too busy eating, but I didn't feel any "cold spots."
