Ice Cream Parlors and Gelaterias

By , About.com Guide

Gelato and Ice Cream in New Orleans:

Along with snoballs, ice cream treats are the best and most delicious coolers in our hot summer weather. Here are some of our old favorites and new friends.

Creole Creamery:

One of the first businesses to reopen since Katrina, the Creole Creamery is located in uptown New Orleans at 4924 Prytania. Their motto is "Eat Ice Cream--Be Happy." And you will--with malts, Sundaes such the Tchoupitoulas made with 8 scoops of ice cream and toppings, and flavors ranging from vanilla to blue cheese-walnut, there is something for every taste.

The Market At Esplanade:

3135 Esplanade Avenue. This is a natural foods grocery with a tempting gelato stand, featuring rich chocolate, refreshing raspberry, and other classics. A great stop if you get hot touring nearby St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery.

Angelo Brocato's:

Brocato's has been making gelato, along with other cool Italian treats, for over 100 years. Spumoni, cassata, and cannoli are high on the list of yummies. Lemon Ice is the summer favorite.

Sophie's Gelato:

At 1912 Magazine Street, Sophie's is an old fashioned ice cream parlor in one of the trendiest parts of town. Specializing in seasonal home made gelato, Sophie's also has other sweet and cool treats, such as the New Mardi Gras Snowball, or the "reverse" root beer float. Great after a long afternoon of shopping.

Gelato Pazzo Caffe:

8115 Oak Street, Uptown. Relocating from Riverwalk Mall, Gelato Pazzo will serve Italian-style entrees, panninis and coffee drinks, along with gelatos such as pear, hazelnut and pistachio.

Haagen Dazs Ice Cream:

621 St. Peter St. in the French Quarter. This chain has the perfect location for serving its wonderful strawberry sorbets and vanilla malts. Refreshing after a stroll in the Quarter.

La Divina Gelateria:

3005 Magazine. La Divina has opened, and earns its name with luscious gelato. It is near the intersection of Magazine St. and Washington Avenue. La Divia also serves light lunches.
