Bustout Burlesque

By Sharon Keating, About.com

If you long for some of that "old school" burlesque that was an art form unto itself, you might want to see the weekend shows at Tipitina's in the French Quarter. "Bustout Burlesque" is an authentic strip show, featuring real show stoppers, not some vacant-eyed "dancers."

The Producer

Bustout Burlesque is the brainchild of Rick DeLaup, a native New Orleanian who is an independent producer and documentary filmmaker. He is an avid collector of New Orleans burlesque memorabilia of the 1940s through 1960s, including rare vintage photos of Bourbon Street striptease dancers. The collection was lost in Katrina, but DeLaup, with his passion for the eccentric moves on.

The Show

Both men and women can enjoy the retro-style entertainment, which features singer Debbie Davis and the comic-emcee Johnny Rock. Among the dancing performers are Athena, the Seductive Harem Girl, Trixie Minx the Tassel Twirler, Pinkie Cupcakes, Foxy Flambeaux, and the Black Pearl. They are accompanied by a live jazz band under the direction of bandleader Jerry Christopher.

The Location

Tipitina's in the French Quarter is located at 233 North Peters Street between Iberville and Bienville. Showtimes are 8pm and 10pm every Saturday night and tickets are $15 general/$20 reserved table seating. The show will run at least through the first weekend of Jazz Fest. Call (504) 975-7425 or (504) 566-7095.
