Fats Gives Back

By , About.com Guide

Legendary singer and musician Fats Domino lost everything in Hurricane Katrina, including his beloved piano, his gold records, and other property and memorabilia. Most people know he had to be rescued from his home in the flooded Ninth Ward, and was forced to live either in a shelter, or with friends, for a long time. Nevertheless, Fats is back and looking to give rather than to receive.

Alive And Kickin'

"Alive and Kickin'" is Fats' first new release since 1993. He wanted to give back to the New Orleans music community, his home sweet home, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. How is this album a "giving back?"

Well, you can't buy it. He's giving it away. Fats donated the alblum to the Tipitina's Foundation, which is giving it away, on its website, for a donation to the Foundation.

Tipitina's Foundation

Tipitina's Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated preserving Louisiana's unique musical cultures, and to developing the local music business. As can be imagined, local muscians were displaced, like everyone else, and suffered loss of their homes, their musical instruments, and their jobs. The Foundation is helping these artists regain their lives as much as possible. This collector's album is Fats' gift to them all.

There are various donation levels that include not only the CD, but also autographed photos and lapel pins. Log on to Tipitina's website for more information.
