Memories of World War II

By Sharon Keating, About.com

Step back in time, to a pivotal point in history, at the National D-Day Museum’s exhibit, “Memories of World War II: Photographs from the Archives of the Associated Press.”

Compelling photographs

The Museum is hosting the exhibit of over 100 photographs from the archives of the Associated Press until May 8, 2005. This special exhibit is located in the Malcolm S. Forbes Theater on the first floor of the museum. You will be struck by the abundance of powerful images, spanning the length of World War II. The collection includes an amazing photograph of a sea of young American soldiers marching down the Champs-Elysee in Paris and heartbreaking images of concentration camp survivors.

Mission to celebrate the American spirit

And while you are there, check out the rest of this wonderful museum whose mission statement is to celebrate the American spirit, the teamwork, optimism, courage, and sacrifice of the men and women who won World War II and promote the exploration and expression of these values by future generations.

The D-Day invasions

The second floor exhibits are devoted to the D-Day Invasions in the Pacific and the Home Front. The third floor focuses on Planning for D-Day and the D-Day Beaches. Oral histories and video exhibits are included on both floors. It is all well worth your time. The D-Day Museum hours are 9-5 daily. It is closed New Year’s Day, Mardi Gras Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
