Hurricane Gustav
Lessons Learned:
The first thing to know about Hurricane Gustav is that it is no Katrina. After Katrina devastated New Orleans, government at all levels failed. We all learned many lessons. The people of New Orleans learned to get out and not depend on government. FEMA learned to prepare and send supplies and people in place before the hurricane, not after. Tbe State government learned to use the National Guard before the hurricane, not after. And, finally, Mayor Nagin learned call an mandatory evacuation early and to use buses.
The Evacuation:
This time there was a plan. The evacuation of the metropolitan area began four days before the estimated time of landfall. Those in need of assistance could call the city and register. Seventeen pickup sites around New Orleans were set up and broadcasted over the media. Those who were unable to get to a pickup site also registered and were picked up. Buses and Trains were used to get these people out of town early. And, there's a plan in place by the city to get these people home the same way.
Contraflow went well even though it was more of a challenge this time because all of coastal Louisiana had to be evacuated, not just the New Orleans area. It was slow moving on the evacuation route, but all were able to get out in time.
Safer Levees:
The Federal Government has spent the money necessary to strengthen the levees, and this time they held firm. While more needs to be done, the improvements in the levee system were well worth it. Thank you America!
Coastal Wetlands:
The main cause of the increased danger of flooding in New Orleans really has little to do with elevation. It is the loss of coastal wetlands all over America, especially along the Louisiana Coast. The facts about the loss of wetlands are frightening, the importance of America's Wetlands is under publicized. Get some facts from the Sierra Club. Also, Save Our Wetlands is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and protection of Louisiana Wetlands, and has some specific information.[/link]
New Orleans Lives!
New Orleans has been around for over 300 years and we're not going anywhere. There is too much history, culture, uniqueness, and strength of character in her people. To lose New Orleans is unthinkable. We thank all of you who understand that. We'll be here when you're ready to come. Make it soon!
