The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, together with the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation, brings you the free, annual Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival.
The Music
The festival features--what else?--blues and BBQ. Saturday, October 17, 2009 brings Buddy Guy, Lafayette slide guitar ace Sonny Landreth, Texas guitar slinger Guitar Shorty, more to the stage. October 18 performers include: Soul blues original Bobby Rush, New Orleans soul queen Irma Thomas, T-Model Ford and lots more. Get the full schedule for both days.
Special Events
In addition to the free festival on Saturday and Sunday, there are two other musical events. On Friday, October 16th Richie Havens will perform at the Howlin' Wolf. Tickets for this event are $20.00 and the proceeds benefit the Foundation's free after-school music program. You can get tickets for this concerton line.
The second special event is a free lecture by Charles Keil, an ethnomusicologist and author of the ground-breaking 1966 book "Urban Blues," will speak on the various meanings of the term "blues" through the ages. Here's the extra info on that event.
The Food
Several restaurants will provide the best barbeque in the south.
For a Good Cause
The festival is dedicated to the men and women in blue--the NOPD. Proceeds will benefit the Police and Justice Foundation. The Foundation will also sponsor "Walk The Beat," a fundraising event, Saturday at the fest.
Crafts
The festival also includes a craft area where local crafters offer unique items for sale.
When and Where
Saturday and Sunday, October 18th and 19th, 2009 at Lafayette Square, home of the Wednesdays in the Square concerts and the fall concerts in September and October. Hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
What About the Big Game Between the New Orleans Saints and The New York Giants
Don't worry about missing the big game, big screens will be set up at the festival tuned to game between the Saints and the Giants.
