Top Picks for Music at the 2009 French Quarter Festival

The French Quarter Festival is bigger than ever. The lineup for 2009 is the best yet. It's harder every year to choose the best bets for music. But, here goes.

Friday, April 17, 2009

I'm going to start with Waylon Thibodeaux & The Bourbon Street Cajuns at 11:15 at the old Mint stage. After I eat a lot on the way, I'm going to make it over to Woldenberg Park for Fredy Omar Con Su Banda at 1:45. Then it's over to Jackson Square to see The Pfister Sisters at 3:00. At 5:00 things get tricky, There's The Nobles in Jackson Square. But, The Zydepunks start at 5:30 in Woldenberg Park. Also at the other end of Woldenberg Park there's Big Sam’s Funky Nation at 6:15 (I love New Orleans Funk.) Soul Rebels are also performing in Woldenberg Park at 6:15. Tough decisions here.

I'm Starting Saturday off at the Jackson Square stage at 11:00 am with a Bloody Mary and Tim Laughlin. I'm moving over to Woldenberg Park to hear Marva Wright. Our plan then is to settle in and watch The Treme Brass Bandat 4:30. Then wonder up and down Royal and Bourbon Streets, eat a lot and then settle down at the Battle the of Bands on Royal Street.

Start off with The Dukes of Dixieland in Woldenberg Park and a Hurricane from Pat O'Brian's. Then it's over to another stage in the park at 12:45 because I never miss Paul Sanchez who will be on stage with John Butte. We'll probably spend the rest of the day in Woldenberg Park since we love Wanda Rouzan & A Taste of New Orleans, and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. I promise you I will be front and center to hear The Radiators, my favorite New Orleans band. But I admit I will be tempted to catch some of Irvin Mayfield's performance in Jackson Square.
