Snowballs In The Quarter

By , About.com Guide

In the New Orleans summer heat, a snowball is the perfect treat to refresh and energize you. Most snowball stands are in neighborhoods, and there is a new one in the city's oldest neighborhood--the French Quarter.

Pizza and Snowballs?

Rotolo's Pizzeria has opened a snowball stand, the only one in the French Quarter. Rotolo's is a popular venue for pizza and pasta, and has several restaurants outside of the city. It opened a place in the Quarter a couple of years ago, but just recently, owners Will and Jennifer Samuels realized they were sitting on a small gold mine. Wilting in the summer heat, tourists and French Quarter denizens needed a chilling treat. Bingo! A great idea was born.

Out of the Decatur side entrance of the restaurant, the Samuels are offering wonderful, icy, snowballs in 18 flavors. There are some non-alcoholic flavors inspired by a local obsession, the cocktail. Think Mint Julep, a Daiquiri, or a Pat O'Brien-type Hurricane. The stand also offers other cool treats such as gelato and sodas. If you are hungry you can buy a slice of Rotolo's Pizza there also.

Where and When

The restaurant is at 201 Decatur Street, at the corner of Iberville, near the House of Blues. It is open daily from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
