Art Night on Julia Street

Sharon Keating (c) 2005

What:

Capital One's Art for Arts' Sake is from 6-9pm on the first Saturday in October. The free citywide gallery hop marks the opening of the city's arts season with cash bars and nearly 50 open galleries along Julia Street. There are also several art openings at various locations throughout Magazine Street, the French Quarter and the New Orleans Warehouse District. Free admission. Plus, there's a great after party at the CAC till midnight.

History of the Event:

In 1979, the CAC created AFAS in order to support the New Orleans local arts community with an evening of music, food & art openings. AFAS has since become the most frequented fund-raising cultural event in New Orleans, attracting nearly 30,000 guests annually.

Dine in the Warehouse/Arts District:

Make it a full evening with dinner at one of the great restaurants in the Warehouse/Arts District. Try 7 on Fulton for trendy surrounds and great food. Or, Tommy's Cuisine for classic Creole Italian food.

Museum Central:

In the surrounding area there are several museums to enjoy. Besides the Contempory Arts Center, there's the National World War 11 Museum, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the Civil War Museum. And, not just for the kids is the Louisiana Children's Museum.

Other Art Strolls:

Art for Arts' Sake is one of the traditional art strolls in New Orleans held each year. Others include White Linen Night always held the first Saturday in August and Dirty Linen Night in the French Quarter held the second Saturday in August.
